Beautifying the Neighborhood

Beautifying the Neighborhood
The Chester Avenue extensions in the 1930s were largely built in residential neighborhoods of Cleveland. Planners in that decade, as well as later in the 1940s, took steps to reduce the impact of the new road extensions on nearby residences by providing buffering, sometimes in the form of small neighborhood parks. This 1938 photograph shows one such park on the northeast corner of Chester Avenue and East 97th Street that was opened in 1937. The park no longer exists, having been replaced by a building erected near the Cleveland Clinic campus. | Source: Cleveland Public Library, Digital Photograph Collection
