Nome, Alaska in 1916
Nome, Alaska was founded in 1901 following the discovery of gold in the region. Developed as a mining district after gold deposits were uncovered in 1898, the town quickly grew to over 10,000 and became the largest city in the U.S. territory. By the time of the serum run, the city's population had dwindled to under a thousand persons. | Source: Library of Congress
