Salt Mine Tunnel

Salt Mine Tunnel
International Salt Company opened a salt-mining operation on Whiskey Island in 1962. As described in a Plain Dealer article on January 8, 1961, the mine, "one of these days, will become an underground world of vast white galleries bearing salt." The floor of the mine was 1,765 feet beneath Lake Erie's surface and eventually stretched some two miles out from the lakeshore. Whiskey Island was International Salt's fourth mine, joining others at Retsof, NY, Detroit, and Avery Island, LA. | Creator: Edward J.
