William H. Brett (1846-1918)

William H. Brett (1846-1918)
Brett served as Director (then called, "Librarian") of Cleveland Public Library from 1884 until his death in 1918. He was largely responsible for creating the modern public library system in Cleveland, instituting, among other things, open shelving, children's rooms and branch libraries, including the Carnegie-West branch library. He trained Linda Eastman, who, after his tragic death in 1918, became the first female to head a metropolitan area library in the United States.
