The oldest son of Robert Wallace, James lived in Wallace Manor until 1887--the year following his marriage to Elizabeth LaMarche. He became involved in the family's iron works and ship building businesses at a young age, doing a variety of work in factories and on board ships. He served as a draughtsman for Cleveland Ship Building Company in the early 1890s and became Vice-President and General Manager of the company in 1894. Upon the formation of the American Ship Building Company (ASBC) in 1899, he became the new organization's first general manager. In 1904, he was elected president of ASBC, an office he held until 1914. Suffering from diabetes, he died at his home in Lakewood in 1916 at the age of 51.
