The American Ship Building Company

The American Ship Building Company
In an article which appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on March 17, 1899, Robert Wallace confirmed that Cleveland Ship Building Company, and other companies, were consolidating to form a new larger ship building company. Wallace, whom newspapers accounts contended would have easily been elected president of the new organization, instead campaigned for his son James to be elected. That maneuver failed and instead W. L. Brown of the Chicago Ship Building Company was elected first president of the American Ship Building Company. James C. Wallace was elected General Manager. Five years later, in 1904, upon Brown's retirement, James was elected president. | Source: Cleveland Public Library, Digital Newspaper Collection
