Robert Mason Wallace (1834-1911)
An immigrant from Northern Ireland, Wallace was a key figure in transforming and modernizing commercial shipbuilding on the Great Lakes. He served as president of Cleveland Ship Building from 1894 until its consolidation with other companies to form the American Ship Building Company in 1899. His son, James Chase Wallace, served as president of that latter organization from 1904-1914. Robert Wallace died in Florida in 1911 and is buried at Cleveland's Riverside Cemetery. The above photo, taken late in his life, is undated. | Source: James C. Wallace, a great-grandson of Robert and Lydia Wallace
