Josiah Barber (1771-1842)
More than any other single person, Josiah Barber was responsible for the developed of an urban community on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River. He laid out the first village development south of what is today the intersection of Detroit Avenue and West 25th Street. He approved the design for Franklin Circle. He was a principal founder of St. John Episcopal Church. He donated the land for Monroe Street Cemetery as well as the land on the northwest corner of West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue which became the site of the Pearl Street Market. He proposed building the first permanent bridge across the Cuyahoga River in 1820.
