The Trailside Museums in the Cleveland Metroparks were popular for their animal exhibits. Living displays, out-of-doors programs, and a "hands-on" approach to education were increasingly employed by natural history museums in the United States throughout the interwar years. In 1940, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History received praise and recognition from both the National Park Service and American Association of Museums for the unique quality of its outdoor programs.
