A Fire Damages the Corning House
On June 16, 1914, just a year after Cranwood Race Track opened, a fire struck, damaging a number of buildings at the track, including the Corning House which was serving as the track's clubhouse. While at first, the Plain Dealer reported that the clubhouse was "destroyed," a day later it published a correction, noting that the structure "was not as badly damaged as first thought." Within a month, Alvin Pennock, the owner of the track, had repaired the clubhouse and it was reopened in time for events held in the Fall racing season. | Date: 1914 | Source: Cleveland Public Library, Digital Newspaper Collection
