Automobile Row

Automobile Row
In the second decade of the twentieth century, as more and more automobiles crowded Cleveland streets, Chester Avenue became a favored route for automobile traffic in and out of downtown in order to avoid the heavy streetcar traffic on Euclid Avenue. By the time that this sketch appeared in the January 9, 1916 edition of the Plain Dealer, Chester Avenue from East 21st to East 30th was no longer known as "Chester Speedway" but instead "Automobile Row." | Source: Cleveland Public Library, Digital Newspaper Collection
