In this photo, Evans and mayor Carl Stokes were seen attending a civil rights march in Cleveland. Previously, Evans and other black leaders in Cleveland had worked with Stokes to “keep it cool for Carl” and prevent urban unrest in the wake of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.
