This section of the 1858 Map of Cuyahoga County shows Hickox Alley (East 3rd Street) between Euclid and Prospect Streets. On the southwest corner of Euclid, where Abram Hickox's blacksmith once sat, is the First Wesleyan Methodist Church, which was built there in 1840. The church's progressive stance on America's nineteenth-century slavery issue appears, according to county tax records, gave rise to Hickox Alley being also popularly referred to by a derogatory, racist name.
