First Foray into Politics
These two photos showing the Democrat and Republican candidates for the 1903 Ward Eight (near west side) Councilman race accompanied an article that appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on March 27 of that year. It was Bernard "Brick" Masterson's first foray into local politics and it didn't go well. He lost to Democrat Michael Feighan. Masterson, at the time a blue collar worker, later opened up a popular saloon at 1313 West 25th Street, became the ward leader for Ward Eight, and, after turning the ward Republican in the election of 1909 which saw the defeat of Tom Johnson, Cleveland's most famous mayor, became known as "Mayor of the Angle." | Source: Cleveland State University, Michael Schwartz Library, Special Collections
