A Slovak immigrant who in the early 1920s lived on Quail Avenue in Lakewood's Bird Town, Risko one day wandered into Danny Dunn's gym at 2861 Detroit Avenue. Dunn immediately spotted potential in the large young man who was later nicknamed "the Rubber Man," because fighters injured themselves punching his hard body.
