Yachting in Cleveland's Fashionable Suburb
The Rocky River Dry Dock Company was founded by boating enthusiast Theodore R. Zickes, and would earn a reputation locally for building racing yachts commissioned by Cleveland's elite citizenry. Prior to opening his business in 1914, Zickes helped organize the Lakewood Yacht Club in Rocky River and established the Lakewood Boat Works. The Rocky River Dry Dock Company closed its doors in 1921 following the end of the shipbuilding boom. Zickes would later establish the Stadium Yacht Basin in the 1930's. His company was commissioned to build 26 minesweepers for the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired in 1945 to sail. | Source: Image courtesy of Cleveland Public Library Photograph Collection
