Sinking of a hostile armed troop carrier by a German submarine in the Mediterranean Sea, 1917
This postcard depicts a painting by Willy Stöwer of a German U-boat sinking an Allied troop carrier. With American and Allied powers years behind Germany in submarine technology, the Central Powers believed their small U-boat fleet would ensure a decisive naval advantage despite Great Britain's larger maritime fleet. Just as the shipping embargo enforced by Great Britain created oil, coal and food shortages in Germany, the Central Powers' campaign of unrestricted submarine warfare aimed to strangle the supply routes into Europe.
