In 1919, the Rocky River Dry Dock Co. completed construction on five Junior Mine Planters for the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. The ships were constructed for use by the Army Mine Planter Service, which was created by Congress in July of the prior year. Previously, the laying of defensive minefields along the coasts was completed by civilian crews under the direction of an artillery officer. | Source: Image courtesy of Cleveland MetroparksDownload Original File
