Americanizing the Work Force
Part of the Progressive agenda in early twentieth century America was helping immigrants assimilate by learning the English language. In this 1916 photo, Mary Barnett Gilson (left) teaches English to a number of the immigrant employees of Joseph & Feiss at the company's offices on West 53rd Street.
