Brookside Stadium, 1968

Brookside Stadium, 1968
With the outpouring of Cleveland residents to the suburbs following World War II, amateur baseball in Cleveland suffered. Once known for their efforts in making Cleveland the sandlot capital of the world, the Cleveland Baseball Federation lost much of their influence and were met with indifference in their efforts to promote the sport. Both the city's declining population and the rise of softball helped lead to the decimation of the sandlot baseball amateur system. Many of Cleveland's baseball diamonds, including Brookside Stadium, fell into disrepair. A space that once hosted the largest amateur sporting event in Cleveland's history became inhospitable for recreation due to inadequate lighting, a lack of public amenities and bad field conditions. | Date: 1968 | Source: Cleveland State University.
