The Van Sweringens' plans for Shaker Heights also took into consideration the importance of including schools in the development of their exclusive community. After completing a study of Shaker's educational requirements in the early 1920s, the Vans set aside land for the construction of eight schools. They also attempted to attract prominent private schools to relocate in Shaker. In 1927, the prestigious Hathaway Brown School for girls relocated from Cleveland to Shaker Heights. The land had previously been offered to Case School of Applied Science and Western Reserve University. | Source: Shaker Historical Society
