E. M. Statler, a Pennsylvania native, got his start in the hotel business in the 1870s in Wheeling, West Virginia. In 1874, at age 13, he started working as a bellboy at Wheeling's McLure House. By 19, he was the de facto manager. Then he invested in temporary hotels at the 1901 Buffalo and 1904 St. Louis world's expositions. The latter, with 2,500 rooms, was the world's largest hotel up to its time. Statler opened his first permanent hotel in Buffalo, New York, in 1907 and went on to build other Statler hotels in Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, New York, and Boston. | Date: October 27, 1912 | Source: Cleveland LeaderDownload Original File
