Dan Ruminski and Alan Dutka reveal in their book on the elites of Cleveland's Millionaires' Row that Francis Drury stirred the ire of the Van Sweringen brothers when he beat them to acquire his Cedar Hill Farm in Gates Mills in 1925. The Vans wanted the land to be part of their planned Shaker Country Estates, a sweeping expansion eastward from their initial Shaker Heights development. According to these authors' research, Drury and his wife in turn suffered social snubs that made them sour on living in Cleveland. As a result, they lived on Cedar Hill Farm just one year. Thereafter, they split their time, enjoying the warmer months in New York City, New Hampshire, and Ontario and the winters at this estate on "The Hill" in Augusta, Georgia. | Date: 1928 | Source: Davey Tree Surgeons advertisement.
