Helen Maria Chesnutt (1880-1969)
She was a daughter of Charles and Susan Perry Chesnutt. A brilliant scholar in her own right, she graduated from Smith College and became a teacher of classical languages in the Cleveland school system. She was one of the first women of color to graduate from Smith and also one of the first women to author a textbook on classical languages. In 1953, she wrote a biography of the life of her father. This photograph was taken for her senior yearbook at Smith. | Date: 1901 | Source: Cleveland Public Library, Collections related to Charles W. Chesnutt
