This photograph, taken in Cleveland in 1888, is of. Charles and Susan Chesnutt's first three surviving children: (from left to right) Ethel (b. 1879, Edwin (b. 1883) and Helen (b. 1880). All three of them graduated from Ivy League schools—Ethel and Helen from Smith College, and Edwin from Harvard. Not shown in this photograph is the Chesnutt's youngest daughter, Dorothy, who was born in 1890, two years after the photograph was taken.
