John Milton Hay (1838-1905)

John Milton Hay (1838-1905)
Born in Indiana and raised in Illinois, Hay served as a private secretary to Abraham Lincoln. He married Clara Stone, daughter of Cleveland industrialist and railroad magnate Amasa Stone. After Amasa Stone's death by suicide in 1883, Hay and Samuel Mather, through their marriages to Stone's daughters, became executors of the Stone estate. Some of that money went to purchase the Western Union Telegraph block at Superior and Water Streets in 1889, leading to the development of the Western Reserve Building that would house the Pickands Mather headquarters. John Hay went on to become Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. His East Boulevard mansion is now part of the Cleveland History Center. | Creator: Hollinger & Rockey | Date: 1897 | Source: Wikimedia Commons
