Setting an American Record in the Long Jump in 1935
At the Drake Relays held in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 26, 1935, Ohio State University track star Jesse Owens won the long jump, setting a new American record and coming within an inch of setting a new world record in the event. This photo shows him in the middle of his winning jump of 26 feet, 1 and 3/4 inches. A month later, at the Big Ten Championship Meet, Owens would break the world record with a jump of 26 feet, 8 inches. | Source: Cleveland Memory Project, Cleveland State University Special Collections
