Mathew D. Crackel (1870-1956)

Mathew D. Crackel (1870-1956)
Born in Illinois, Crackel was a YMCA volunteer in Evanston before coming to Cleveland and becoming Secretary of the Junior Department of the Central YMCA in 1898. In 1901, he became Secretary of the new West Side YMCA, a position he held until his retirement in 1933. (The above photo was taken in 1903, just two years into his tenure as head of the West Side YMCA.) Crackel was an inspirational speaker and believed in the YMCA's muscular Christianity program, taking YMCA boys on long hikes, called "gypsy trips" that covered hundreds of miles. Crackel was also responsible for the formation of Cleveland's first Boy Scout troop, at the West Side YMCA in 1910. He died in his house at 4512 Franklin Boulevard in 1956.
