Aerial View of St. Luke's
St. Luke’s was a large hospital with over 380,000 square feet of space. It was located atop the so-called "Heights" to the west of Cleveland's border with Shaker Heights and just north of the center of Buckeye, a neighborhood of mostly Hungarian Americans with sizable Italian and Slovak populations as well. By the 1950s, African Americans were moving into the adjacent Woodland Hills neighborhood "down the hill" to the west but were widely viewed as unwelcome, a mindset that was repeated at the hospital, according to protesters. | Date: ca. 1950 | Source: National Institutes of Health
