Disorder in Hough confirmed the growing fears of many Cleveland residents in June, 1966. Discontent over segregation and inequality had previously surfaced across the country in the form of civic unrest, arson and looting; Cleveland would be no exception. Since 1964, racial violence flared during the summer months within urban centers in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Illinois. The 1965 Watts uprisings in California presented an escalation to the scope and severity of racial turmoil.
