1950 Traffic Jam

1950 Traffic Jam
Even after the Chester Avenue extension from East Ninth Street to University Circle was completed in 1949, traffic problems still existed on sections east and west of the Chester "Freeway" because they had not been widened to six lanes. This produced traffic bottlenecks like the one shown in this photograph at East 40th Street and Chester. It would take another 30 years before all road widening projects needed would eliminate traffic bottlenecks like this one were constructed. | Source: Cleveland State University, Michael Schwartz Library, Special Collections
