Eliza Bryant

Eliza Bryant
Portrait of Eliza Bryant, the creator of the Cleveland Home for Aged Colored People. Eliza Bryant saw a need for an elderly home for African Americans because the elderly homes in the Cleveland were segregated. Bryant fundraised for years to build a home for elderly African Americans. She achieved this goal on August 11, 1897, with the opening of the Cleveland Home for Aged Colored People on 284 Giddings. In 1960, the home would change its name to the Eliza Bryant Home to honor their founder. | Source: Cleveland Memory Project, Cleveland State University Library Special Collections
