Ellen Ewing served as library director for Shaker Heights Public Library between 1938 and 1949, and guided the development of the civic institution during its formative years. Ewing, however, died prior to the completion of the Main Library building on Lee Road. A seven-day vacation cruise of Lake Ontario aboard the SS Noronic turned tragic when the ship caught fire while docked in Toronto Harbor.
