Shaker Heights Public Library
The Library Board of Trustees commissioned a study in the late 1980s to explore options for expansion. Moreland Elementary School was chosen as the future site of the civic institution in part due to its longstanding significance within the community and its proximity to both Shaker Towne Center and City Hall. The historic structure had been vacant since 1987, following a reorganization of the City's school system. While renovation of the old school house would be just as expensive as new construction, the building was determined to be architecturally well-suited to house library services. During renovations, the main entrance of the building was relocated from Van Aken Boulevard to the school's rear parking lot. | Source: Shaker Heights Public Library, Local History Collection
