Alanson Granville Hopkinson (1823-1896)

Alanson Granville Hopkinson (1823-1896)
At one time principal of an Ohio City grade school for advanced students, Hopkinson was the driving force behind the effort to found a public high school on the west side after the annexation of Ohio City to Cleveland in 1854. Largely as a result of his efforts, West High School was founded in 1855. Hopkinson, who lived on Franklin Boulevard for most of his life, became the new high school's first principal, serving in the office until 1870. | Source: Cleveland State University, Michael Schwartz Library, Special Collections
