William Burton (1792-1872)

William Burton (1792-1872)
A ship captain from Vermont, Burton came to Cleveland in 1835 and was the following year elected Councilman in the first Ohio City elections. No doubt this had something to do with the fact that he had formed a business partnership with Richard Lord, son of the original proprietor of Brooklyn Township. This photo was taken in Cleveland circa 1860, shortly before he retired to his island on Lake Michigan. | Source: Phyllis Begens
