The YMCA was an early advocate of offering physical education to young men as a method of encouraging well-rounded personal development. Fitness and health programs proved incredibly popular with Cleveland residents; the YMCA typically attracted more participants than any group work agency in Cleveland by the mid 1900s, including settlement houses and the Boy Scouts.
