Works Progress Administration projects at the zoo in 1935 paid general laborers $55 a month, and cementers $85 a month. City zoo keepers at Brookside in 1936 probably made a similar monthly amount, taking in $3.75 a day. The average annual monthly income in the United States that year was $125.
