Encountering health problems in her middle age, Mary Baker Eddy studied metaphysics and came to believe that quoting and interpreting Biblical scripture could heal illnesses. She founded her Christian Science religion in 1866. When she died in 1910, she was called one of the most influential women of the nineteenth century.
