An ethnic Slovak living in Hungary during the period of Magyarization, 13-year old John Pankuch immigrated to America with his family in 1883. As the result of an accident he suffered while mining coal in western Pennsylvania in 1884, he put down his shovel and eventually picked up his pen instead.
