Cows at Shaker Lake, 1876
In 1836, the Shakers dammed Doan Brook to harness water power for their industries. On the right of the photograph is Elder James S. Prescott, a stone mason who helped construct the dam. Prior to joining the Shaker community, he had worked as a teacher and missionary with Native Americans.
