Hart Building

Hart Building
The Hart Building is actually two combined buildings. The older building (right center) was faced in brick and completed in 1853, one year after William Hart's previous building burned down. The newer building (left center) was added to fill a nine-foot-wide space in 1868. Unlike the original, it was faced in cast iron made to appear like stone. The original mansard roof was added to create a fifth floor and unify the buildings. In the 1930s the top floor was remodeled to appear undifferentiated from the lower four stories, but in the 1980s renovation the mansard roof was restored. | Creator: J.
