Lutz Long

Lutz Long
According to Jesse Owens, he would have likely fouled out and not won the broad jump at the 1936 Berlin Olympics had it not been for Lutz Long, a German broad jumper also competing in the event. Long calmed Owens' jitters after he fouled in his first two jumps. On his third and final jump, Owens qualified for the finals in the event, which he ultimately won. Long, whom Owens considered a friend, was later conscripted into the German army during World War II and died in battle in Sicily in 1943. | Source: Cleveland Memory Project, Cleveland State University Special Collections
