Born in England in 1824, Sarah came to the United States with her parents in the early 1840s. She married John Bousfield in Kirtland, Ohio in 1845. The family moved to Cleveland in 1855. John and Sarah had ten children, only six of whom lived to adulthood. Like many nineteenth century elite women, Sarah was active in many charities, particularly those that benefitted children. She lived in the Sarah Bousfield House from 1884 until her death a decade later in 1894.
