Evocative Georgian Architecture

This is a postcard which displays St. Luke’s Hospital. St. Luke’s Georgian style is well on display. It was among the many buildings around the U.S. that were loosely modeled on Independence Hall, a phenomenon that the historian Charlene Mires describes in her book, Independence Hall in American Memory. Unfortunately for African American patients and employees, the symbolism of the hospital's architecture did not always translate into the same spirit of equality in healthcare, leading to protests by the 1950s.
